Found after a short bit heavy rain. Temperature dropped to 62 after the rain and up to 66 when this toad was found. The toad was sitting on the side of the road sitting up when we spotted it. We walked up to the toad and it didn’t move at all. After a few minutes the toad hopped away towards the grass on the side of the road but landed on its side.
With a coot in its talons
Seen outstretched to the side of trail ~50 meters from bank - upon seeing people, flattened head and began hissing.
Likely male and female pair negotiating a mating union. When they noticed a threatening presence, only one rattlesnake primarily rattled their tail. At the first opportunity they escaped together into a wooded region. Upon this hiding spot being found, one left the other behind to find a new secure spot. Possibly the female leaving behind the male, as she likely has fewer instinctual qualms about leaving behind a prospective mate during this season.
