Found dead on a sidewalk outside a suburban shopping complex. Retained for preservation.
Very rapid blink so fast that it you blinked your eyes at the same time you could miss it! Blinked every 1.5 to 2 seconds. Very numerous, big marsh with tall grassland and sennas. Hard to catch lol
Private property. Southborough, MA.
size: 12mm
flash: Flicker like flash similar to tremulans; given from vegetation.
notes: The flash was observed from vegetation so we cannot assume it was a typical display flash, but I went to check it out because I've never seen a flicker flash coming from vegetation before. I thought this one was worth posting because I've never observed this combination of dark scutellum but light hind coxae. It was the only flash of this kind I saw, and I only saw it do it a couple of times before I collected it. The only other Photuris that I saw were female. Overall very little firefly activity as the season is winding down here.
The pictures of the claws are not meant to help in identification, I just wanted to include them because Photuris claws are cool and it's difficult to see them without a microscope.
