The lichen was very wet, grows on a rock,
lobes 1 to 1.5 mm wide,
lower surface black, more pale near the margin, ecorticate, black rhizines,
upper surface maculate, colorless hairs.
Apothecia ~0.2–0.5 mm. Spores mostly 2 celled, sizes 18.8 x 9.9 μm (n=3). Growing over moss and decaying organic matter in calcareous, sunny habitat. Hypothecium is super distinctive and clear, left behind after the apothecia are relatively easily removed. Paraphyses seem to be unbranched.
maculate lobes, pustulate tips. wet from spraying with spritzer. on hemlock, if memory serves correctly. EDIT: Jim Hinds disagrees based on range. I think it requires further examination. H showmanii may be more common than previously believed. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/265145548_Hypotrachyna_showmanii_A_Misunderstood_Species_From_Eastern_North_America
Thallus lobed; lacking distinct prothallus; lacking isidia. Alvar pavement.
