Journal Entry- Lab 5

Hoof Fungus
(Fomes fomentarius)

The Fomes fomentarius was the fungi that caught most of my attention on lab 5. It’s very distinctive horse-hoof shape is what gave it its name Hoof fungus. I remember noticing how it was emerging form the side of the trunk of the tree; this is because it feeds on dead or live hardwoods. This fungi has been used for medical purposes to absorb blood and other fluids. It also contains substance that have an anti-cancer effect, are tested against herpes and combats certain influenza strains.
