Now retired, I was a historical archaeologist for more than 40 years. Working outdoors solidified my love for all the creatures we would encounter. I am particularly fond of butterflies, other insects, and flowers.
A note about the number of butterflies/moths in one area. Behind my office was a very large, untended field that had been allowed to grow up in thistle (bad for flora, but most attractive to some birds and many butterflies and insects). At lunch, during breaks - whenever the chance arose - I would grab my camera and 'shoot' whatever I found in the field and along the edges. It was wonderful. I could stand in the field and watch dozens of butterflies (majority E. Tiger Swallowtails) flutter around. In fact, I was out standing in the field when the 2011 earthquake hit!
