I have been an organic farmer since 1987, which led me into observing bees, birds, butterflies, insects and all sorts of other denizens of the natural world. My love for my gardens, and all who came to enjoy them, grew into a passion for identifying native CA plants, then a degree in Environmental Studies and later identifying native WA plants, and searching for rare and endangered plants in the Olympic Mountains and Cascades for UW Rare Care. I am now a landscape designer specializing in wildlife friendly gardens, and a consultant for development and restoration projects. A background in Conservation District management has led me to a greater awareness of the need for balancing the needs of Nature against the demands of humans. This is not always an easy negotiation but, I believe, the deeper we understand Nature and how much our well-being depends upon the well-being and proper functioning of our natural systems the more we will want to find the path to balance and away from merely extracting from Nature.
