Originally from Maryland, USA, I spent a year teaching in a primary school in Kosrae, Micronesia (1981-1982), 3 years working as a US Peace Corps wildlife biologist for the Museo Nacional de Historia Natural del Paraguay in Paraguay (1987-1989), 9 years teaching at the University of the Southern Caribbean and the University of the West Indies in Trinidad (1993-2002), 1 year working as a wildlife biologist for the Wildlife Division of the US Virgin Islands (2002-2003), and since 2003 I have been a biology professor at Pacific Union College in California, USA. In 2012 I taught courses as a Fulbright Scholar at the Universidad Nacional de Asunción and Universidad San Carlos in Paraguay.

Birds are my forte but I enjoy photographing, identifying and learning about anything that moves--and plants, too, but to a lesser extent.

I have taken students from Pacific Union College on 25 "overseas" trips to Thailand (1), Fiji (5), Micronesia (1), Alaska (3), Mexico (1), Honduras (2), Panama (1), Trinidad and Tobago (1), Brazil (5), Paraguay (1), and Kenya (4), plus desert biology tours of California and Nevada (2). While teaching on Trinidad I took students on trips to Tobago (20+), Guyana (1) and Venezuela (1). I have published the results of field research in 17 countries. My publications are listed here:
