Orthocraspeda HAMPSON, 1893
Fauna Br. India (Moths) 1: 373 (key), 393. Type species: Parasa trima MOORE, 1860, by original
designation.
= Thoseoides SHIRAKI, 1913
Spec. Rep. Form. Agr. Sta. 8: 388, 391. Type species: Thoseoides fasciata SHIRAKI, 1913, by
original designation.
The genus includes small moths with forewing pattern similar to Darna WALKER, 1862
but usually with 3 black fasciae (Colour plate 15, figs 23–24). In male genitalia, the
uncus is not baloon-shaped, and has lost the rows of ventral scales (Genitalia plate 10,
figs 4–5). The larvae are of the nettle type (Colour plate 18, figs 9–10).
The genus includes 8 species: O. trima (MOORE, 1859), O. trima ajavana HOLLOWAY,
1986, O. furva (WILEMAN, 1911) (= Thoseoides fasciata SHIRAKI, 1913), O. catenatus
(SNELLEN, 1879), O. sordida SNELLEN, 1900 (= Orthocraspeda luticrista TAMS, 1924)),
O. bornesordida HOLLOWAY, 1986, O. luzonica HOLLOWAY, 1987, O. mindanensis
HOLLOWAY, 1987, and O. tuaranensis (HOLLOWAY, 1976). The taxon Darna
(Orthocraspeda) trima ajavana HOLLOWAY, 1986 is probably a synonym of
Orthocraspeda trima (MOORE, 1859). The taxonomic position of O. nemacera
HAMPSON, 1900 is unclear so far. The genus is known from India to Sundaland.
