Haworth originally described Sphinx quinquemaculata in 1803. Thus the species epithet quinquemaculata has priority. Unfortunately, Bugguide uses the incorrect quinquemaculatus for reason I do not understand. (MPG also mnakes the same mistake.) The brand new checklist of NA Leps by Greg Pohl, Bob Patterson & Jon Pelham uses the -ta epithet. I suggest we do not follow BG, and use the taxonomically correct epithet. Further I suggest that iNat use the Pohl et al checklist as the authority for names. This checklist has a lot more scientific authority than BG, IMHO.
