A third leafy gall found on Grindelia sp.! I split this one carefully open with my fingernail to find a perfect little chamber in the center of the leafy gall filled with ~10 small translucent larva! When I was done photographing, I smushed the two halves back together because the sap is so sticky and left the gall on the plant.

Live specimen collected from mapped location on 6/30/2022. Apart from marginal cilia, whole plant is glabrous. Original stem and leaves shown in first two photos, lowest leaves are somewhat shallowly cordate and less sharply serrate than typical cordifolium, this was consistent across numerous plants of this type that we saw in the area. The plant then put out a second stem after a few weeks in potting soil on my back deck; lowest leaves of the new stem were long petiolate but not particularly cordate at all, and mid stem petioles were much more winged.

Thought it might be urophyllum when I collected it, but it's currently in bloom and the ray petals and phyllaries are distinctly cordifolium-like.

Same plant as here: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/138491443. Leaves and stem are still glabrous, although they may appear puberulent upon zoom due to a bad case of powdery mildew. Looks like cordifolium from the neck up, urophyllum from the neck down… possible lowrieanum?

This larva appeared today on the Hazardia squarrosa leaf logged here a couple days ago: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/116514246. I'm hazarding a guess here as to ID of course. There is definitely a pocket formed where leaf spot is darkest.

Super cool!! Large cluster of galls around stem of Artemisia ludoviciana with two recently emerged gall midges perched right above the galls. They were both females with very impressive ovipositors. Very fascinating part of nature that I was lucky to witness. I'm IDing as Rhopalomyia because every other Cecidomyiid forming galls on Artemisia is from that genus, and the adults are imilar in coloration to Rhopalomyia that have been reared by others.

While this isn't the greatest photo, it does nicely show why the bandy wings of these flies might help them to mimic jumping spiders. Face-on, the black bands on the wings look like two pairs of slightly folded jumping spider legs. As jumping spiders are a major predator of flies like this, adaptations to discourage attack are beneficial. This fly is haunting its host plant, a goldenrod (Solidago sp.).
For a fun review of insects thought to have spider-mimicking markings, see: Hill, David E., A. P. C. Abhijith, and João P. Burini. "Do jumping spiders (Araneae: Salticidae) draw their own portraits." Peckhamia 179.1 (2019): 1-14.

On new upper leaves of Solidago rigida, Stiff Goldenrod. Largest gall 6.5 mm diameter. Opening on bottom of leaf. About half the galls had very frisky orange larvae or pupae. The other half had an apparent wasp parasitoid pupa hanging from the top of the gall as in the second to last photo, or a tiny quiet larva as in the third to last photo. 4th photo shows larva’s topside, 5th show its bottom side with maybe prolegs. Last photo is to confirm ID of host plant, a bit worse for the wear after being in my pants pocket for half a day and the fridge overnight.
