Saw this snake in the scrub oaks and assumed Northern Black Racer, boy were we surprised when it was a ratsnake! This record was recorded with the state wildlife officials in Massachusetts.

Trophic level- secondary consumer
Adult North American Racer is black from above and dark grey from below, with white on chin or throat. Its scales are smooth. They can be anywhere from 3-5 ft long.
Female lays 3-30 eggs in a hidden nest site. Juveniles hatch in early fall and are 8-10 in long. Maturity reaches around two years old.
