Arcata Marsh Field Notes Day 9

My partner and I left hsu at 2:32 and arrived at the Arcata marsh at 2:42. It was rainy and windy. It is 64 degrees fahrenheit. We arrived at the JCM, instantly we saw a birds. The birds nearby had the shape of an avocet, however, they were brown with dark brown spots. We saw a flock of at least 100 birds flying around or feeding farther down. We were able to distinguish the color of their wingspread: Black at the ends, white in the middle, then a grayish or brownish color inside (or on their back). We stayed 21 minutes trying to distinguish these birds. Finally, we concluded that avocets were different in color, so these could have not been them. We left this exciting spot at 3:14. There were also a couple other species of birds, including ducks.

We arrived as tour tree #10 at 3:28. Our willow has almost 100% leave coverage. It’s amazing how much they’ve grown. When taking the four photos, we were unable to take the canopy shot from the same spot because the string/tape we left to mark the spot was no longer there. It is now very windy but the rain has stopped. On our way back to the car, we come across an Egret, who got scared of as we came closer. We left the marsh at 3:54.

Arcata Marsh Field Notes Day 7

03/14/2019
My partner and I left HSU main parking lot at 17:17. We arrived to the Arcata Marsh parking lot at 17:23. Arrived at the Jacoby Creek Marsh at 17:40.

The weather was mostly clear/sunny (54 degrees F). The tide was very low. Today was different because there were some birds hanging out at this spot. Usually, it is clear with nothing but water in sight. Unfortunately, the only birds we could distinguish were ducks that were somewhat near. It is possible there were 2-3 avocets, but we could not distinguish them. We left this spot at 17:55.
There's a very small breeze. It is a very nice day. A random lady saw us taking notes and was interested in our project.
Observing the tree, it s clear it has advanced in growth. Many leaf buds have opened up, bringing more color to the tree. The leaves also grew in size and number, covering the mostly clear sky in the canopy picture.
We left the Arcata marsh at 18:25.

Arcata Marsh Field Notes Day 5

Arrived at the Arcata marsh at 15:28 via RTS Southbound bus that left from the HSU Library Circle. The normally 15 minute bus ride became a 30 minute ride due to an unhappy passenger with a complaint. On South I St I took a left to follow the cement trail all the way to the oxidation ponds. The weather is very calm, the sun is trying to peak out from all the clouds covering most of the sky.

Arrived at the JCM at 15:57. The pond was still, the tide was very low. There were no avocets or birds on sight. I began leaving at 16:06. The environment was very quiet, the only noise coming from some kind of motor running. Important thought: maybe my group should move to Klopp lake to observe avocets.

Turning NW the wind the wind picks up, however, it’s not strong because it is a calm day. I arrived at our tree #10 at 16:18. I notice the tree’s leaves and buds are growing. About 75% of the tree is covered in breaking buds, with white fuzzy. About 1 in 5 branches have a flower with pollen.

Leaving tree #10 at 16:29, I do not see as many ducks as I have in the previous weeks. Walking back to leave the arcata marsh, the day is still very calm with only a small breeze and cloudy sky.

Arcata Marsh Field Notes Day 3

Walking on cement path towards the Arcata Wastewater Treatment Plant. The day is partly sunny/ partly cloudy, 48 degrees Fahrenheit.

Arrived at Oxidation Pond 1 at 14:03. The tide is low. Water is very still and muddy. No Avocets on sight. Some birds including geese and ducks. While standing and observing, the breeze is small.

Walking W of the trail, the wind is picking up. Turning right (N) the wind is even stronger. Turning right (E) the wind is gone. We arrived at tree #10 at 14:33. The tree's buds are coming out and have white fuzz. Before getting closer to the tree, two black ducks rested under the tree.

Heading back in the same path, a big flock of at least 100 geese is circling around before landing North of the Salt Marsh.

At the oxidation, observing a male willow tree as an example. 13:56 . Details for this tree are in willow worksheet. The wind has picked up since we got here.

14:15 Moving in between oxidation ponds 1 & 2 we will find our tree half way in. Tree #10. Very Windy. Tree is in early developing stages. There is one male flower visible. More details of tree #10 in willow tree worksheet.
